02-2008
So... After school and my first gig I decided to look for a job (being a broke graduate is only fun for about a day) at Macys. I was in a group interview when this girl came in late. I was a brat and judged her on everything from her being tardy to her clothes to her answers to the meaningless questions Macys asks potential employees. As we left for a lunch break (yes their process is ridiculously long) she asked me to eat at the food court with her. I was hesitant at first but I was hungry and didn't want to be alone. So as we ate our greasy soft pretzels we I started to learn a lot about her. Turns out she is one of the most amazing photographers I've ever seen, and worse she was younger than me. So I was sitting at the food court with a girl who was incredibly gifted and young.
We were supposed to be back to Macys in 20 minutes but wound up being pretty late. Needless to say we didn't get the job... but it was to our advantage. We started to work together shortly therafter. Doing photoshoots with up and coming models and jewelry designers. Some of my best work was all thanks to her. Not only is Nikki one of my favorite people to work with, she is one of my close friends. Her editing work, photography, makeup, and hair skills are comparable to the work you see in beauty magazines.
I'm going to admit that I had a big piece of humble pie after this whole experience. Someone who I had the nerve to judge ended up helping me with my career, being one of my best friends, and becomming my mentor. I was young, immature, and had my guard up, but I will always have this girls back; I will always think highly of her personally and profesionally. She has skills that I aspire to have.

MakeupMandys word of advice: Do NOT prejudge anyone! You never know what could happen. Always have a friendly smile and say "hello" to every single person you meet. Before you have to learn this for yourself, go ahead and eat that piece of humble pie.

DNTEL
DNTEL- RED
So on 01/29/08 I did a music video/commercial (Gap Ad) for DNTEL. DNTEL is jimmy tamborello from The Postal Service (the electronic half of the duo). The Gap is doing a Viral Ad for their up coming line of clothes that are supposed to be bright and colorful. DNTEL had to do a song about the color red and the video would coenside. The four other artists in The Gaps new campaign include The Raveonettes, Swizz Beats, The Blakes, and MariƩ Digby. This was my very first "gig" outside of school and friends. It was a great experience, the crew was fantastic, they paid me really well, and all I had to do was airbrush! Directors James Frost and Mary Fagot were incredible, Amy Strozzi was a great makeup artist (watch for the red lips!), and Ross Levine and Jason Baum were very sweet to me (producer and production coordinator). Chad Williams and Gina Clover were also fantastic actors....you should look them all up!
Overall it was the best first "gig" I could have ever gotten. It comes out February 15th, 2008 on the net so go Google it soon!
Oh p.s. wanna know how I even landed this as my FIRST "gig"? Our school has a site for listings of people needing makeup artists. They needed someone to airbrush and I have all the equipment except an air compressor. So I emailed them anyway and they called back saying they needed me the following Sunday...I felt safe that i could find a way to borrow, buy, or rent a compressor somehow in a week. Thirty minutes later they call back saying "we need you tomorrow actually." I was about to have a nervous breakdown. I was a broke graduate and every compressor started around $200. My angel of a grandmother hopped in the car with me as we searched every airbrush or art center in our area. We finally found a good one, and she spent about $300 on it.
MakeupMandys word of advice: Being kind to your grandparents can save your career (and sanity!). Now go tell them you love them!
Airbrush: Paashe
Air compressor: Iwata
Paint: Temptu
